Setting Yourself up in Spain

Child Birth and General formalities
Midwives and Antenatal Classes:
Register the Birth
- The Irish Midwife: http://www.irishmidwife.com/eng/welcome.html (They run antenatal classes in English through the year in Nueva Andalucia (30 mins from Sotogrande)
Register the Birth
- Hospital report: Before you leave the hospital after giving birth be sure to get a hospital report of the birth:
- Civil Registration: Attend the local registry office within 8 days of the birth (or 30 if you have good reason for not being able to attend earlier) to register the birth of your baby
- Birth Certificate: Create a birth Certificate online: Look for 'LITERAL' certificate if you want to be able to apply for a passport in another country.
- Contact your home countries (where you child is eligible for a passport) to register the birth and apply for a passport
- Apply for a health card
- Register your child as resident (You will first need the baby's passport, Spanish birth certificate or an official translation of non-spanish birth certificate, medical card, your residency card, a copy of your passport, 2 passport photos of the baby, photocopies of everything and a form EX18 (Not yet sure where this is, but likely at the civil registry or national police station)
Becoming Autonomo
The simple way: Contract a Bilingual Asesoria (approx 50.00euros per month) to set up all your formalities, pay your social security costs and manage and submit your quarterly and annual accounts.
Changing Your Driving Licence to Spanish (It can take a year!)
- Find a Gestoria to initiate this process for you and give them:
- Your driving licence and 2 photocopies
- 2 photos (Follow these directions: https://visafoto.com/es_permiso_de_conduccion_32x26mm_photo)
- A copy of your passport
- A copy of your certificado empadronamiento
- A medical certificate from an official centre that does the driving test medical (there is one in La Linea, opposite the Gibraltar border and beside the traffic offices (ask at the taxi rank for directions, they will point at the building across the road).
The Gestoria will then send the docuements to Trafico who will start the process of exchanging your licence. Be prepared for a lesson in patience - it can take anything from 3-9 months!
With a Gestoria, including the licence exchange, it will cost just under 100.00 euros. You can go direct to Trafico yourself and it will be just under 30.00 Euros (They require you to book an advance appointment, which you may have to wait 3 months to attend!)
